Early Childhood Screening
Schedule Early Childhood Screening
Early Childhood screening is a free and simple check of how your child is growing, developing and learning.
Screening is required by the State of Minnesota for any child enrolling in a public school and is provided free of charge. While screening is required prior to kindergarten, the recommended age is 3 and is required prior to enrollment in preschool and pre-kindergarten programs. For more information, visit the Minnesota Department for Children, Youth and Families website.
During screening a trained professional will check:
- vision and hearing
- height and weight
- immunization history
- large and small muscles
- thinking, language and communication skills
- social and emotional development

Healthy Kids Minnesota
South Washington County Schools (SoWashCo Schools) is partnering with the Minnesota Department of Health on a statewide program that helps families learn about possible exposure to environmental chemicals—such as mercury, arsenic, and pesticides—that may impact children’s health.
Participation is voluntary. Families with children ages 3–6 can choose to participate during their Early Childhood Screening appointment. Testing will be available Monday through Thursday during afternoon appointments. The process is simple and the results of the test are confidential. At the end of the screening appointment, families will complete a short survey and help their child provide a urine sample to test for more than 70 chemicals. Please note: testing does not include PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals.”
All participating families will receive a free well water testing kit and a $40 gift card as a thank-you.
If you have questions, please contact our Screening Office at screening@sowashco.org.
